MEP Minister Zhou Shengxian met with Peter Kent, Canadian Minister of the Environment on the sideline event of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development on June 21. Zhou accompanied Premier Wen Jiabao to the event.

Zhou spoke highly of the bilateral environmental cooperation in the meeting. China and Canada enjoy a solid cooperation foundation, especially China Council for International Cooperation on Environment and Development (CCICED) boasts a long history and fruitful achievements, said Zhou. This could not have been possible without the generous supports of the Canadian Government to the Council. Zhou hoped that in its fifth phase, the Council will continue its cooperation with Canada and develops into a better mechanism.

Kent said that the Canadian side highly valued the cooperation with China in the environmental protection field and that Environment Canada would be willing to enhance communications with its Chinese counterpart and uplift the bilateral cooperation in the environment field to a higher level.

MEP Vice Minister Li Ganjie and MEP Chief Engineer for Nuclear Safety and Director General of Department of International Cooperation Xu Qinghua also attended the meeting.
